On A PC

Press the Windows Key (Or Click Start) & Just Type!

Pressing the Windows key is the same thing as clicking the start button, but why use the mouse when you're just going to start typing anyway?

Try typing the name of an application you use often, like Word, or Chrome, then pressing enter. This can also help you find settings, applications, contacts, calendar events, files etc.

On A Mac

Press Command-Space Bar & Type!

You could also click the Magnifying Glass in the top right, but why use the mouse when you're just going to start typing anyway?

Try typing the name of an application you use often, like Word, or Chrome, then pressing enter. This can also help you find settings, applications, contacts*, calendar events*, some files etc :-)

Why not just click?

Clean, Uncluttered Desktop

I'm quite fastidious about my PC's desktop (it's much easier to keep clean than my real one), but by no means do you need to empty yours like mine!

Sometimes if I'm working on a file/document, just like on a real desktop, it's saved here. When finished with it, it gets added to Google Drive or emailed away and deleted from the space, ready for the next task (just like the image of CMD-Space Bar there for this very tip)

Save Time

Because anything and everything on your computer can be started/found by pressing the Windows Key or Cmd-Space Bar then typing, I don't need to spend time trawling through the start menu or icons on my desktop.

Notice in the screenshot it's even found the most recent Word documents I've edited (admittedly a while ago, I usually use Google Docs). I could then use the arrow keys to select which I want to open, and press enter, all without my hands leaving the keyboard (Which on a laptop can save lots of time!)
